March 12, 2015 (Houston, TX) - Stewart A. Feldman, CEO and General Counsel for Capstone Associated Services Ltd. addressed members of Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers, Inc.(AHMI) at its annual meeting in Bonita Springs, Florida on Friday, February 27, 2015. Mr. Feldman's presentation included an overview of two federal tax code planning ideas -- Interest Charged-Domestic International Sales Companies (IC-DISCs) and captive insurance companies under IRC Section 831(b).
Association members generally process and ship lumber products internationally with the IC-DISC providing them with significant federal income incentives for engaging in foreign sales of U.S. manufactured products.
In addition to the IC-DISC, attendees received an overview of captive insurance/alternative risk planning, which allows businesses to form a "for profit," partially/fully tax exempt, property & casualty insurer which focuses on providing coverages to associated operations. The businesses represented at the meeting -- saw mills/kilns/timber/harvesting/wood product businesses -- can fill gaps in their existing insurance coverage with a captive insurance company. They would have access to both primary and ancillary benefits, including tailored risk coverages, tax-deductible premiums used to finance future expected losses, and asset protection.
In total, there were more than 100 Association members in attendance, ranging from sawmill owners to manufacturers of flooring, wood products, and hardwood processing equipment.
Capstone's representation at this annual meeting reflects its commitment to bringing captive planning and IC-DISC services to mid-market businesses across the U.S., including those in manufacturing, transportation, oil & gas, construction, and healthcare. Since 1998, Capstone, along with The Feldman Law Firm LLP have offered exceptional insurance, tax, and legal expertise in the captive insurance area.
